We all want our kids to be happy at Christmas. But most of us want more than that. We want our kids to be kind, too. That can be difficult with so much emphasis at Christmas on getting. But it isn’t impossible.
I’ve been focusing for a number of years on ways for kids to develop character at Christmastime. I want to share the resources I’ve been gathering to teach kids to be kind.
The Ultimate Guide to Having Kind Kids This Christmas
In my post “How to Help Your Kids Develop Character at Christmastime,” you’ll find a list of 4 important ways you can focus on character along with a roundup of resources.
I’m excited about the variations of Elf on the Shelf that encourage kindness. You can find a roundup of ideas in my post “Using Variations of Elf on the Shelf to Encourage Kindness.”
In my post on “Using Kindness Elves to Encourage Kindness {Ideas and Free Printables},” I added more resources and free printables.
In my “New Kindness Elf Ideas for Building Character This Christmas,” I added even more ideas.
Get ideas for switching to Kindness Elves from Elf on the Shelf.
Another idea I love is the idea of “Using the Christmas Angel to Encourage Kindness.”

I love the thought of encouraging kindness in kids. I’m an elementary teacher and read many books to my students on these topics. I need to continue these discussions with my own children. I’m excited to check out your Elf on the Shelf ideas.

Great post! In this day and age of ‘me first’ and entitlement mentality, we need to teach our kids empathy and kindness, even to those who wronged them.

We should definitely encourage our children to be kind, not just during the holidays but all year round. Great post!

Hey Deb,
Thank you for sharing this post, I especially like your idea to emphasize kindness. Using the holidays, and talking about giving, is a great way to do that.
Also, some great activities here!
