Let’s talk about the elephant in the room ….
I just couldn’t resist saying that. My 23-month-old granddaughter, Zoey, always picks the elephant as her favorite animal on the carousel. While that elephant is fun and cute, the one we’re fighting isn’t.
“About 1 in 8 U.S. women (about 12%) will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime.” (Just one of the frightening statistics from BreastCancer.org) Even though that’s a U.S. statistic, we all have to look at the fact that we’ll be touched by breast cancer in one way or another (if we haven’t been already).
I just have to share this for a third time:
“People used to say everyone knows someone who’s had breast cancer. In the past few weeks, I’ve learned something else: Everyone has someone close to them who has had breast cancer.”
– Debbie Wasserman Schultz
So none of us are immune. I know. My mom is a breast cancer survivor. Thanks to early detection, she was able to be cured with one of the milder treatments.
The Fabulous Chitwood Ladies Are Back!
My family loves to participate in the Susan G. Komen San Diego Race for the Cure in honor of my mom.
As of last year, the Fabulous Chitwood Ladies Team consisted of my daughter Christina, daughter-in-law Chea, granddaughter Zoey, and me. Last year, the event was right on Zoey’s 1st birthday!
This year, it’s on November 1, the day before Zoey’s 2nd birthday. We’ll be up bright and early (even a night owl like me) doing the 5K Susan G Komen San Diego Race for the Cure. Please check out The Fabulous Chitwood Ladies Team page. We’d love it if you’d make a donation through our team!
Breast Cancer Awareness Resources
You’ll find all my previous breast cancer posts along with lots of ways both adults and kids can get involved in Breast Cancer Awareness month here: Breast Cancer Awareness Ideas for Adults and Kids.
Help your child do something extra special in support of a loved one dealing with breast cancer: “Make a ’10 Things I Love About You’ Book {Free Printable}.” Or your child could make a special card, photo album, or scrapbook to support someone with cancer.
