Teaching kids manners and good character takes lessons and practice, lessons and practice, lessons and practice…. A fun way to reinforce the necessary lessons and practice is through the sport of golf.

How to Teach Your Kids Manners and Good Character through Golf

My son-in-law, Tom Parkin, is a golf coach (as well as a DJ and music composer). Tom is the one who taught me about the benefits of golf for kids. I’ve been doing a month-long golf unit with my 4½-year-old granddaughter, Zoey, as shown on my Living Montessori Now blog. It’s been such a fun unit with the history and geography of golf, fine-motor activities, and hands-on activities in each curriculum area. Of course, actually playing golf is a perfect activity for a golf unit, whether you want to play on a free putting green or play a game of golf.

Teaching Manners and Good Character through Golf

An essential part of golf for any age is learning about golf etiquette. I don’t know of another sport that encourages manners and integrity as well as golf. Honesty and good sportsmanship are actively encouraged in golf. I believe that good character is the most important benefit a child can get from sports. But it has to be encouraged much more than winning.

That’s why I have so many posts about character here at Bits of Positivity. And for you to encourage good character, you must be committed to being a good sports parent … one who promotes character more than winning. That’s true whether your child is a recreational athlete or an elite athlete.
